MPS Standing Office for UN Peacekeeping Operations rolls out 2025 work plan

The Standing Office for UN Peacekeeping Operations under the Ministry of Public Security (MPS) held a meeting to roll out its 2025 work plan, on the morning of February 20th, in Hanoi.

The Standing Office for UN Peacekeeping Operations under the Ministry of Public Security (MPS) held a meeting to roll out its 2025 work plan, on the morning of February 20th, in Hanoi.

As the standing unit responsible for implementing MPS's project on the Vietnamese Public Security Forces’ Participation in UN Peacekeeping Operations (Project 05), the MPS Standing Office for UN Peacekeeping Operations proactively coordinated with relevant units to successfully fulfill its assigned tasks in 2024.

Accordingly, the office actively advised the Public Security Central Party Committee and MPS leaders on the deployment public security officers to UN peacekeeping missions worldwide, contributing to reaffirming Vietnam’s commitment to international peace and security.

Notably, in 2024, MPS deployed Working Group No. 3 and Working Group No. 4 to carry out UN peacekeeping duties at the UN Mission in South Sudan and the UN Interim Security Force for Abyei.

It also competed the procedures for the extension of the tenure of Vietnamese police officers working at the UN headquarters and Working Group No. 2 in South Sudan.

A significant milestone was marked as the MPS's Formed Police Unit (FPU) for UN peacekeeping was upgraded to Level 2 in the UN Rapid Deployment Level of the Peacekeeping Capability Readiness System, marking a major step forward in Vietnam’s contributions to international peacekeeping operations.

In addition, the office actively advised and assisted the MPS leadership in developing and perfecting the legal framework for Vietnam’s UN peacekeeping operations, while strengthening cooperation with international partners in training and capacity-building of Vietnamese police peacekeepers.

Speaking at the meeting, Major General Nguyen Sy Quang praised the MPS Standing Office for UN Peacekeeping Operations for its great effort, responsibility and contributions to deployment of the Vietnamese police peacekeepers to UN peacekeeping missions, stressing that the success of the participating Vietnamese police officers contributed to enhancing the position and reputation of Vietnam’s peacekeeping forces in general and the MPS’s peacekeeping force in particular on the international arena.

Major General Nguyen Sy Quang requested that the MPS Standing Office for UN Peacekeeping Operations continue to advise the Public Security Central Party Committee and MPS leaders on the legal framework for peacekeeping operations, as well as create most favorable conditions for Vietnamese police peacekeepers in the field.

The Chief of the Office also stressed the need to pay due attention to selecting, training, and building capacity of Vietnamese police OK9 Cabidates for future UN peacekeeping operations.

Additionally, Major General Nguyen Sy Quang requested the office to enhance its leadership and management of Vietnamese public security officers currently working at the UN headquarters and peacekeeping missions, strengthen international cooperation on UN peacekeeping and further promote public communication to raise public awareness of the role and contributions of the Vietnamese Public Security Forces to UN peacekeeping.
