International Workshop on Female Police Officers joining UN Peacekeeping Operation takes place in Hanoi

The People’s Security Academy, in collaboration with relevant agencies and units under the Ministry of Public Security of Vietnam and international organizations, held an international workshop entitled “Female Police Officers joining the United Nations’ Peacekeeping Operations – Opportunities and Challenges” on May 30th, in Hanoi.

The People’s Security Academy, in collaboration with relevant agencies and units under the Ministry of Public Security of Vietnam and international organizations, held an international workshop entitled “Female Police Officers joining the United Nations’ Peacekeeping Operations – Opportunities and Challenges” on May 30th, in Hanoi.

At the conference, delegates from countries with much experience in sending forces to UN peacekeeping missions and international organizations shared valuable lessons from joining peacekeeping missions. They also discussed not only opportunities  but also barriers and challenges to female officers’ participation in UN peacekeeping operations.

These discussions provided Vietnamese female police officers with basic understanding of the peacekeeping operations, helping them be ready to perform their assigned duties at UN peacekeeping missions.

Canadian Ambassador for Women, Peace and Security Jacqueline O’Neill highlighted the situation of female officers participating in UN peacekeeping operations as well as underlined issues related to recruitment and training of officers joining peacekeeping forces.

At the conference, female officers from Vietnam People's Armed Forces expressed their great honor and pride of their participation in the UN peacekeeping operations. They also showed their readiness to undertake and successfully fulfill the difficult and challenging tasks assigned by higher authorities when working at UN peacekeeping missions.

To further increase the number of female police officers at UN peacekeeping missions, delegates suggested several policies to encourage and support female officers, including early selecting and building capacity of potential female officers and strengthening international cooperation in training female officers.
