At 7 pm on July 26, Traffic Police Team No.7 under the Hanoi Traffic Police Office while working on Nguyen Trai street, Van Quan ward, Ha Dong district, detected 3 people (a female driver, a middle-aged man and a child) riding on a motorbike without wearing helmets.

The team signaled to stop the vehicle and asked the driver to hand her documents. While the police were making records on the traffic safety violation, the man was cursing at the policemen. Hung finally picked up a brick to attack Captain Mai Hung Son, one of the working team, making his head cut and bleed .

The working team simultaneously overpowered, arrested the attacker, and then took him to the Van Quan ward police post for investigation.

Earlier, at 11.30 am on July 9, Lieutenant Nguyen Trong Quy of the traffic police team of the An Lao District Police Station, Hai Phong, signaled to stop a motorbike as the driver did not wear a helmet. But the driver ran into the policeman, leaving the policeman with multiple injuries. The policeman was then hospitalized and doctors had to work hard for 10 hours to save his life.

These are only two examples of the acts of violence against traffic police officers. Such savage actions have not only risked lives of traffic police officers, but also caused public anger and anxiety.

A report of the Traffic Police Department read that, in the first 6 months of 2019, there were 11 acts of violence against the traffic police force, causing 1 dead, 3 injured.

Since 2017, 107 acts of violence against the police force have been recorded, killing four policemen and injuring 26 others.

Acts of violence against the law enforcement force in general and against the traffic police force in particular must be legally considered and condemned acts of disregarding the laws and negatively affect public security and order.

In order to thoroughly prevent acts of violence against the law enforcement forces in general and against the traffic police force in particular, the procuracy and court should prosecute and conduct hearings on the cases in the public eye.

Competent agencies should also supplement and amend the laws on handling acts of violence against the law enforcement forces with serious penalties to deter such offences.

The laws should also give more power to the law enforcement forces so that law enforcement officers could use weapons and supporting tools to protect themselves in specific circumstances.

Meanwhile, the National Assembly is expected to add the law project on ensuring traffic safety and order to its agenda for its sittings of the 14th term.
