- Vietnam prioritizes sending police officers to UN peacekeeping missions
- President asks public security officers to try their best to fullfill UN peacekeeping tasks
Politburo Member and Minister of Public Security General To Lam attended and delivered a keynote speech at the event.
Head of the Peacekeeping Standing Office under the MPS Major General Dao Xuan Lan briefed delegates at the event on the pre-deployment process of the 3 Vietnamese police officers to UN peacekeeping missions.
Under a decision signed by the State President on September 22, the 3 officers are to join the UN peacekeeping mission in South Sudan (UNMISS). They are Senior Colonel Le Quoc Huy, Lieutenant Colonel Vu Viet Hung and Lieutenant Colonel Luong Thi Tra Vinh.
To date, 8 police officers have been checked and qualified by the UN to join UN peacekeeping missions, including one currently working at the UN headquarters and 7 others joining the UN peacekeeping mission in South Sudan.
At the event on October 10, Minister To Lam, under the authority of the State President, handed the deployment decisions signed by the State President and certificates of merit by the Minister of Public Security to the 3 police officers.
Minister To Lam applauded the effort of the MPS Peacekeeping Standing Office as well as relevant agencies and especially the 3 police officers in the pre-deployment process over the past time.
The official deployment of the 3 police officers to the UN peacekeeping mission in South Sudan marked an important milestone in Vietnam’s security cooperation with the UN.
This also reflects the view of Vietnam in international relations: Vietnam wants to be a friend, a trustworthy partner and a responsible member of international community, Lam said.
It also demonstrated a new development in international integration of the MPS.
It is clear that Vietnamese police officers can successfully work with their peers from other countries in an international working environment.
According to the minister, the MPS leadership has attached great importance to the deployment of police officers to UN peacekeeping missions over the past years, considering it a contribution to realizing the commitments of Vietnam to the international community in maintaining peace, stability, security and development in the region and in the world.
In return, the Vietnamese police participation in UN peacekeeping operations will hopefully lift Vietnam’s position and prestige in the international arena.
Minister To Lam asked the 3 police officers to strictly abide by the regulations of the UN peacekeeping mission and the law of the host country when performing their duties. They should also maintain the discipline of the Vietnam Public Security Forces and collaborate closely with Vietnamese military officers working in South Sudan as well as enhance friendship with international colleagues.
Minister Lam requested that they overcome all difficulties and successfully fulfil the tasks given by the MPS and the UN peacekeeping mission.
Speaking on behalf of the deployed officers, Senior Colonel Le Quoc Huy thanked the Party, State and Government and the MPS for their attention and care.
He promised to do his best to fulfil all given tasks, while contributing to promoting the peace-loving tradition of the Vietnamese people, embellishing the image of Vietnam and the Public Security Forces in the international arena.
