Vietnam, UNODC strengthen cooperation on crime prevention and fighting

On behalf of the Ministry of Public Security (MPS) of Vietnam, Deputy Minister Le Quy Vuong extended his thanks to UNODC in general and the UNODC office in Southeast Asia and the Pacific in particular for their support for the MPS in projects of various fields, including capacity building capabilities of fighting drug-related crime, money laundering, illegal migration, domestic violence and child sexual assault, as well as HIV prevention and control in prisons.

In the hope to further strengthen effective cooperation between the two sides, Deputy Minister Le Quy Vuong wished that, in the coming time, UNODC continues to support Vietnam in preventing and cobating drug-related, organized and cross-country crimes; to fund activities within the framework of the memorandum of understanding signed in 1993 on drug cooperation between the Mekong sub-region countries and UNODC-run programs and projects; and to map out new projects in the period of 2017 - 2021.

The Deputy Minister also asked UNODC to further assist the MPS in carrying out HIV/AIDS prevention, care and treatment activities; setting up Quick Response Teams for Domestic Violence Prevention and Control in Ben Tre and other provinces and cities to improve the quality of life for people, as well as prevent and eliminate domestic violence.

Senior Lieutenant General Vuong also hoped that UNODC continuously supports Vietnam in organizing training courses on expertise and foreign languages ​​for local law enforcement officers responsible for transnational crimes, especially drug-related crime, money laundering, human trafficking, and illegal wildlife trade, as well as in improving the country’s capacity for judicial assistance and extradition, prison management and rehabilitation of prisoners, and upgrading its technical equipment specialized in crime prevention and combat.

Mr. Jeremy Douglas thanked Deputy Minister Le Quy Vuong for the reception. He also sent his sincere gratitude to relevant authorities of Vietnam, including the MPS, for their close cooperation in the past time with UNODC on drug-related crime prevention and control. Mr. Jeremy Douglas stressed that he would do his best to consolidate cooperation between the MPS of Vietnam and UNODC.
