Vietnam, Cambodia agree to expand security cooperation

Deputy Minister of Public Security Senior Lieutenant General Luong Tam Quang paid a courtesy visit to Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Samdech Krolahom Sar Kheng at the National Assembly of the Kingdom of Cambodia on June 22, during his ongoing visit to Cambodia.

At the meeting, the guest congratulated Cambodia on the successful organization of the election of commune-level councils of the fifth term, saying that the victory of the Cambodian People’s Party in the election demonstrated the trust of the Cambodians in the party and its leadership.

He also praised the large contribution of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Samdech Krolahom Sar Kheng to Cambodia’s national development as well as the important role of the Ministry of Interior in ensuring public order and safety in the country during the election as well as in the post-election time.

General Quang highlighted the traditional friendly relationship between the two countries as well as effective cooperation between the Vietnamese Ministry of Public Security and the Ministry of Interior of the Kingdom of Cambodia, saying that the Party and State of Vietnam always treasure the traditional good, friendly ties and comprehensive cooperation between the two countries.

He also said that the Vietnamese side is willing to share experience with the Cambodian side in ensuring security and safety for major political events in the countries, such as the general election and SEA Games 32 to be hosted by Cambodia in 2023.

During the meeting, the two sides shared the same view that the bilateral relations had seen positive developments in spite of instabilities in the region and the Covid-19 pandemic. Over the past time, leaders of the two countries regularly met each other either online or face to face to discuss approaches to strengthen the bilateral relations and cooperation.   

The host stressed the importance of meetings between leaders of the two ministries, saying that it would contribute positively to strengthening ties and cooperation between the two sides and responding issues related to the two countries in a timely and effective manner.

Thanking the Ministry of Public Security of Vietnam for its support and effective coordination, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Samdech Krolahom Sar Kheng highly appreciated the shared experience and support from the Vietnamese side for the Cambodian side in safeguarding major political events in the country over the past time.

He also recalled the Vietnamese support for the Cambodians to oust the genocidal regime of Pol Pot.

He wished, the two ministries would closely coordinate in celebrating the 55th anniversary of the establishment of Vietnam-Cambodia diplomatic relations.

Earlier, the Vietnamese deputy minister of public security had meeting with Secretary of State, Ministry of Interior, Sok Phal.

The two sides agreed to joint efforts to strengthen the management of entry and exit along the shared borderline, control crime along the border and maintain order and security in the border areas of each country while creating favorable conditions for border trade.

General Quang asked the Cambodian side to continue granting legal residency documents to Vietnamese nationals in Cambodia, helping them stabilize their lives, integrate in the local communities and contribute more to the local socio-economic development.

The Vietnamese official also wished that the Cambodian Government would provide support for the Vietnamese nationals who have to relocate their homes for infrastructural projects, such as arranging sites with especial public projects for them to build their homes and offering them funding for relocation and change of their livelihoods.

He suggested the two sides accelerate the planting of land border markers and open more border gates to facilitate border trade between the two sides.
