SOMTC and Related Meetings are considered very important annual meetings of law enforcement forces of ASEAN countries.

The opening session saw the presence of various senior officials from ASEAN member countries, ASEAN’s partners and international organizations. The Vietnamese delegation to the event was led by Major General Truong Van Thong, Director of the Foreign Affairs Department of the Ministry of Public Security.

Speaking at the plenary session of the meeting, Major General Truong Van Thong stressed that, in the recent times,  the region and the world have continuously saw complex developments in transnational crimes, particularly terrorism, human trafficking and high-tech crime with more sophisticated and devious tricks and manners.

The Vietnam's representative thus suggested that, in the coming time, law enforcement agencies of ASEAN member countries should further strengthen cooperation in sharing information, exchanging experiences and effectively implementing plans on prevention and combat against those crimes in order to ensure regional security and order.

Alongside the SOMTC 18 official sessions, there were also consultations between SOMTC and ASEAN’s dialogue partners, namely China, Japan, Korea, Australia, Russian Federation, European Union, New Zealand, the USA, Canada and India.  The participating parties reviewed the situation and approved joint action plans on transnational crime prevention and control for ASEAN countries and ASEAN’s dialogue partners. The results of the SOMTC 18 will be reported to the 12th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Transnational Crime Prevention (AMMTC12) in Myanmar, scheduled for October 29 to November 2.
