Minister To Lam welcomed the delegation of the New Zealand Police to attend the 39th ASEANAPOL in Vietnam, and highlighted that the two Vietnam visit of Mr. Mike Bush this time and in July 2018 demonstrated that New Zealand treasures the cooperation with ASEAN and Vietnam, as well as with the Ministry of Public Security (MPS) of Vietnam.

The Vietnam – New Zealand relations have enjoyed fine developments in various areas. At the same time, the cooperation between the MPS of Vietnam and the New Zealand Police also gained various good outcomes.

Minister To Lam spoke highly of the outcomes of the talks and the cooperation agreement newly signed during the talks between the MPS and the New Zealand Police on transnational crime prevention and control, replacing the previous one signed in 2010. Minister To Lam hoped that the two sides would further cooperation under the newly-signed agreement.

Mr. Mike Bush thanked Minister To Lam for the reception and wished that the 39th ASEANAPOL would be of great success. He also emphasized that the New Zealand Police hoped to promote the cooperation with the MPS of Vietnam in controlling transnational crime and ensuring security and order in each country.

On the same day, Deputy Minister Senior Lieutenant General Le QuyVuong heading a Vietnamese police delegation held talks with the delegation of the New Zealand Police.

At the talks, the two sides agreed to further promote their cooperation, contributing to strengthening relations between the two countries. The New Zealand side affirmed its support for Vietnam at multilateral forums, especially when Vietnam becomes the ASEAN Chair in 2020 and a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council.

The two sides also agreed to work together to develop a plan to successfully implement the agreement, regularly meet each other to review outcomes of the implementation. They both stressed the importance of increase exchange of delegations and information sharing.

The Vietnamese side wished that relevant agencies of New Zealand would continuously support the MPS of Vietnam in training its personnel.

At the talks, the two sides are considering signing deals such as criminal justice support agreement, extradition agreement and agreement on the transfer of sentenced persons, to create legal foundations for cooperation in crime prevention and control.

At the end of the talks, Deputy Minister Le Quy Vuong and Commissioner of Police Michael Bush signed an agreement on cooperation in transnational crime prevention and control between the two countries.
