As a mountainous province in the Northern Central Highlands, with 44 ethnic groups living together, of which ethnic minorities account for 46.23% (mainly Jrai and Bahnar people), Gia Lai has a strategic position in terms of economy, defense, and security, considering the center of the Vietnam - Laos - Cambodia development triangle with great potential.

In recent years, the province's economic, cultural, and social situation has had positive developments. Gia Lai’s authorities attach great importance to the issue of administrative reform, improving the investment environment and enhancing competitiveness of the province.

However, along with the socio-economic development, the security and order situation, the activities of all types of crimes have begun to become complicated. Against this backdrop, the Gia Lai Provincial police advised the local Party Committee and authority to developed a security camera project.

Since 2015, the local government has implemented an expansive network of cameras funded by government bodies, private businesses, and citizen contributions. Currently, 422 systems with 4,284 cameras have been installed across the province’s 17 districts.

The camera locations are at the boundary of administrative zones, crossroads, junctions, residential areas, market areas, hot spots of security and order. Security surveillance cameras are installed openly on roads to raise the public awareness of compliance with the laws as well as to warn and deter bad elements from committing criminal acts. The image from the camera is transmitted simultaneously to the local police post and the district police station to coordinate, helping the police to quickly handle any offences.

According to Senior Colonel Nguyen Ngoc Son – Deputy Director of Gia Lai Provincial Police Department, this initiative has proven effective in crime prevention and resolution. Security cameras have assisted police in solving over 300 cases, including thefts, property damage, and traffic violations. For instance, in Pleiku City, 45 advanced cameras equipped with automatic traffic violation detection were installed at a cost of nearly 50 billion VND, significantly improving traffic law compliance and road safety.

He also noted that, the highlight of the security camera model is that in recent years, hundreds of thousands of households across Gia Lai province have participated in contributing and supporting the cost of installing security cameras to ensure security and order.

“Individuals and businesses have actively supported this effort by installing personal security cameras, creating a comprehensive monitoring network. Beyond deterring crimes, the widespread use of cameras contributes to public trust in local law enforcement, strengthens community cooperation, and enhances the quality of life”, said Senior Colonel Nguyen Ngoc Son.
