Many fire fighters of the Fire Police Department of Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) were exhausted, leaning against nearby trees or fire engines to rest. Their faces were smoke-stained after risking their lives and jumping into the fierce fire to save hundreds of residents’ lives.

Upon receiving information about a fire incident at Carina Plaza, fire fighters of the District 8 Fire Division, HCMC, raced to the scene. The situation was chaotic with fire, dark smoke and explosions from the basement parking, and panic yells and call for help from upper apartments.

“When we arrived there, smoke had covered the building. Many people were running out of the building to escape danger while we were rushing into the fire to save people stuck inside,” said Chau Ngoc Quang, a fire fighter of the District 8 Fire Division.

Quang, who saved 20 people from the fire, went on to say that fire fighters  do not think much of their lives. Whenever they see a person alive, they will spare no pains to save the person. On duty, fire fighters always view lives of people the most important and they should save as many lives as possible.

“I will never forget the fierce battle today,” the 20-year-old fire fighter said.
