As many as 465 out of 466 deputies attending the year-end session of the National Assembly voted in favour of the resolution presented by the NA Standing Committee.

“The National Assembly Standing Committee, the National Election Council, the Government, the Vietnam Fatherland Front Central Committee and relevant agencies are responsible for implementing this resolution,” said the adopted resolution.

On June 20, 2020, the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of Vietnam promulgated Directive No. 45 signed by Party General Secretary and State President Nguyen Phu Trong, underlying the importance of the upcoming general elections.

The directive says election of deputies to the 15th National Assembly and People’s Councils at all levels for the 2021 - 2026 term is an important political event of the country aimed at selecting and electing competent delegates representing people’s will, aspirations and mastery rights to the coming National Assembly and People's Councils at all levels.

The Politburo required the Party organisations to work out specific leading and organization plans to ensure the election will be conducted in a fair, democratic, safe and economical manner according to the law.

To prepare for the event, the National Election Council (NEC) was established in June 2020 and led by Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan,  incumbent Chairwoman of the 14th National Assembly.

The NEC convened its first session on August to complete its apparatus and examine preparations for the general elections next year.
