The competition was within the framework of the Project “Improving Resilience of Vulnerable Coastal Community to Climate Related Impacts in Vietnam”. The purpose of the competition was to create a useful playground for school students and offer them a great opportunity to explore, share their creative ideas and understanding with each other of disaster prevention and control, climate change adaptation as well as to help raise public awareness of climate change.

After three months running the competition, the organizers received more than 500 entries from students currently studying at secondary schools in the central provinces of Quang Nam, Thua Thien Hue and Ninh Thuan. These entries varied in forms and contained many path-breaking ideas, profound contents and innovative expressions, reflecting the interests, enthusiasm and full engagement of the participants in the Competition.

The special prize was awarded to seventh graders Truong Nguyen Y Nhu and Tran Thanh Thuy of Nguyen Binh Khiem Secondary School in Hoi An City of Quang Nam province. They were honored for their film “Waking sleeping land after the disaster”. Their five-minute documentary introduces the countryside land by the Thu Bon River, which used to be populous and attractive to tourists, but has now been deserted since the flood swept the land in 2000. Feeling pity for the land with large potential for economic development, the two school girls have decided to conduct a survey and give innovative ideas to develop the land as a tourist destination.

The winners of the two highest prizes will be invited to the Traditional Disaster Day Ceremony organized by the Central Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control in Hanoi to introduce their projects.

Apart from the prizes, the organizing panel also presented consolation prizes, and the Vietnam Disaster Management Authority gave certificates of merit to more than 40 students with excellent projects selected for the Final Round.
