Viettel makes the first 5G call in Vietnam

PSNews – Vietnam has become one of the earliest countries in the world successfully testing a 5G network. The 5G technology has met the 3GPP standards and its actual network connection speed has reached 1.5 to 1.7 Gbps, surpassing that of the 4G network.
  • Viettel Global reports VND 166 billion of profit in 2019’s Q1
  • Viettel Global's gross profit margin in 2018 peaks in 4 years

The first 5G call in Vietnam was conducted last week by the Telecom Group Viettel and Sweden’s Ericsson Group.

The call was part of Viettel’s 5G technical testing programs to evaluate the overall application of the 5G technology in Vietnam.

At the event, the connection speech of 5G network between terminals reached 1.5 to 1.7Gbps, surpassing the theoretical speed limit of the 4G LTE network and equal to the speed of the commercial fiber optic cable.

Speaking at the event, Minister of Information and Communications Nguyen Manh Hung highly appreciated Viettel’s effort to deploy and master the technology after 3 months it got the license.

The event also marked Vietnam as one of the earliest countries in the world successfully testing a 5G network.

The Sweden Group Ericsson has teamed up with Viettel in this experimental implementation of 5G.

The telecommunication giant with over 140 years of experience has joined Viettel’s efforts in applying the latest mobile technology to Vietnam. Viettel has become the first network operator in Vietnam that has helped the country to keep up with 5G-leading countries in the world namely the US, Australia, Japan and South Korea.

At the event, Viettel also said that it plans to run pilot projects on 5G networks in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, with the aims of backing the Ministry of Information and Communications in making comprehensive evaluation of 5G technology based on the criteria of coverage, capacity, maximum speed and compatibility with the current infrastructure.

Base on that evaluation, the Ministry can draw up policies and roadmaps to exploit 5G networks commercially in 2020.
