Vietnam, Thailand hold conference on detoxification for drug addicts

PSNews–A conference themed “Detoxification and rehabilitation for drug addicts in Vietnam and Thailand” was organized on August 24 in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC).

The Conference was co-organized by the Standing Office on Drug Control under the Ministry of Public Security, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs and representatives from provincial/municipal Departments of Health, Departments of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs of HCMC, Can Tho, Ba Ria – Vung Tau, Dong Nai and Binh Dương and experts from Thailand.

The Vietnam’s delegation was led by Deputy Chief Inspector of the Ministry of Health Giang Han Minh and the delegation of Thailand was led by Deputy Director General of the Department of Medical Services, Paskon Chaivanichsiri.

Participants at the conference discussed various drug-related issues faced by Southeast Asian countries. Vietnam and Thailand are under direct and profound impacts of these issues and Vietnam has been implementing various comprehensive measures, including prioritizing the prevention of illegal drug trafficking. In addition to promoting law enforcement, Vietnam has also conducted education and dissemination activities on drug prevention and calling on the whole society to join hands in implementing various detoxification models and closely managing legal activities related to drug.

The leader of the Thai delegation appreciated Vietnam’s achievements in the field over the past time, especially the implementation of bilateral agreements on drug combat signed by Vietnam and Thailand in 1998. He also stressed that in addition to the joint efforts of the two governments and relevant forces, more effective methods are still needed in either drug combat or detoxification, applying new and effective models and methods to building a drug-free ASEAN community.

The conference runs from August 24 to 26.
