Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Le Thi Thu Hang made this comment on December 9 in reply to a reporter's question regarding the Cambodian Prime Minister's statement expressing a desire for General Min Aung Hlaing, Prime Minister of the Provisional Myanmar Government, to attend high-level meetings of ASEAN next year.

"Vietnam supports Cambodia to well take on the role of ASEAN chair in 2022. ASEAN's affairs are always discussed and agreed upon by member countries according to the processes, procedures and provisions of the ASEAN charter," the spokesperson added.

This comes after an event held in Prey Veng province on December 6 saw Cambodian PM Hun Sen state that he will visit Myanmar and meet with General Min Aung Hlaing to discuss further strengthening solidarity and unification in ASEAN.

As the rotating chair of the bloc in 2022, whether Cambodia can successfully organise ASEAN meetings with the full participation of 10 member countries is one of the main issues that has captured the attention of observers.

Due to this issue, Cambodian PM Hun Sen is actively seeking appropriate solutions aimed at promoting cohesion in ASEAN, especially in terms of promoting diplomacy in a bid to achieve progress on the crisis in Myanmar.
