Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue (R) and Mexican Senate President Olga Sanchez Cordero hold online talks on July 18.

Hue said Vietnam is keen to further strengthen ties with Mexico through high-level exchanges and making use of existing co-operation mechanisms such as political consultation, as well as the joint committee for economic, trade, and investment co-operation.

In response, Cordero extended her greetings to Hue and said that parliamentary diplomacy represents an important foreign policy channel, particularly as it contributes to enriching relations between countries, bringing different peoples closer together and boosting understanding about culture and diversity from countries like Vietnam.

Both legislative leaders informed each other about the encouraging results the two countries have recorded in post-pandemic socio-economic recovery and development, as well as policies and decisions made by the two legislative bodies aimed at supporting their respective economies and cushioning the impact of the pandemic.

They noted that despite the negative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, two-way trade turnover between Vietnam and Mexico last year reached US$5.06 billion, up 37.5% year on year.

NA Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue says vietnam is willing to share its experience in pandemic control and economic recovery with Mexico.

The two leaders shared the view that the two countries boast great potential for stronger economic and trading ties, especially when they are both members of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).

They therefore agreed that the legislative bodies of each side should seek to create favourable conditions for their businesses to access each other’s markets and fully tap into the numerous incentives brought about by the CPTPP.

Vietnam is willing to share its experience in disease control and post-pandemic economic recovery with Mexico, whilst further strengthening bilateral trade relations in a more balanced direction to create conditions for products and businesses of the two countries to enter each other’s markets, Hue told Cordero.

Cordero recalled that at the Vietnam - Mexico business forum held in early July, the two sides discussed various opportunities to diversify bilateral trade relations and promote investment.

The Congress of the Union of Mexico always supports the two sides in swiftly completing negotiations and signing important co-operation documents including those relating to customs co-operation, double taxation avoidance, education, and training co-operation, she said.

The two leaders also highly appreciated bilateral co-operation in the fields of national defence, culture, education, and traditional medicine.

Senate President Olga Sanchez Cordero assures that the Congress of the Union supports the signing of new cooperation documents between the two countries,

The Mexican Senate President said that the North American country will facilitate and support the preservation of four monuments honouring late Vietnamese President Ho Chi Minh. It will also maintain scholarships specifically for Vietnamese students at Mexican institutions, in addition to sending art delegations to festivals in both Vietnam and Mexico as a means of bringing their cultures closer to the people.

She added that the Mexican side wishes to strengthen co-operation on cross-border crime prevention and control and other priority security issues with Vietnam.

Both leaders highly appreciated the close co-ordination and support between the two sides at multilateral forums such as the UN, the World Trade Organisation, the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum (APEC), and the Forum for East Asia-Latin America Cooperation (FEALAC).

They therefore agreed to work closely in a bid to further promote the relationship between the two States, legislative bodies, and peoples. They said that they believe the traditional friendship and co-operative relationship between the two countries will grow stronger in the interest of the two peoples, and for the causes of peace, stability, co-operation, and development in the region and the wilder world.
