Vietnam elected chair of WIPO General Assembly

At the opening session of the 57th meeting of WIPO General Assembly in Geneva, Switzerland on October 2, Ambassador Duong Chi Dung, Head of Vietnam's Permanent Mission to the United Nations, the World Trade Organization (WTO) and other international organizations in Geneva  has been elected Chairman of the WIPO General Assembly period 2018 - 2019.

This honor is a significant milestone in Vietnam's foreign affairs, showing Vietnam's prestige in multilateral forums. As Chairman, Ambassador Duong Chi Dung will directly run all working sessions of this year - WIPO General Assembly such as operating and controlling voting processes, timeframes and list of participating member.

Before being appointed as Head of Vietnam's Permanent Mission to the United Nations, WTO and other international organizations in Geneva, he held several important positions in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, such as Director of the Consular Department, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Vietnam to France.

Ambassador Dung was the OK9 Cabidate of countries in the Asia-Pacific region, which has not had any representatives serving as Chairperson of the WIPO General Assembly for 12 years.

He shared that his election with the absolute support of the all 191 member countries reflected their trust in and support to Vietnam. It was also the achievement of active contributions by the Vietnamese mission in Geneva and himself to WIPO’s activities.

The WIPO General Assembly, founded in 1967, is one of the 16 specialized agencies of the United Nations.

WIPO is the first and also the most important partner of Vietnam in terms of international cooperation in intellectual property. It has provided the country with much assistance in law making, capacity building, personnel training, and public awareness improvement.
