Vietnam asks for closer regional cooperation in drug prevention and control in region

Minister of Public Security, General To Lam chaired the plenary session of the Ministerial Meeting on Enhancing the Cooperation Effectiveness in Combating Transnational Drug Crimes on September 10.

Delegates at the meeting discussed new routes, hotspots and methods of drug trafficking in the region as well as immediate approaches to effectively fight drug crimes along borderlines, particularly routes connecting the Golden Triangle and other regions.

They agreed to share lists and records of drug dealers and wanted criminals hiding in other countries, and coordinate with each other in verifying information, opening joint investigation into cross-border drug networks and joining efforts to interrogate the accused to eliminate the whole transnational drug network and arrest the ringleader.

Regional delegates also appreciated the role and support of the Drug Enforcement Administration of the U.S (DEA), Australian Federal Police Office (AFP), South East Asia and Pacific Office of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).

Minister To Lam emphasized that the countries in the region should promote the leading role in crafting anti-drug policy and strategy, actively launch operations to suppress drug crimes, particularly in border areas and drugs and precursors trafficking routes from the Golden Triangle.

Delegates also considered an initiative to erect drug checkpoints in the peripheries of the Golden Triangle to isolate this drug production hub while more effectively preventing drugs and precursors from being trafficked to regional countries.

A joint declaration of the Meeting was also adopted in the session.
