Depury Minister of Public Security Maj. Gen. Nguyen Van Long speaks at the press briefing.

Prisoners who are eligible for amnesty this year include those who are serving fixed term sentences in jail, those who have life sentences reduced and those who have sentences suspended. The beneficiaries must show their good conduct during their prison terms.

The time for serving the prison sentence for amnesty consideration is until August 31, 2022.

Deputy Minister of Public Security Maj. Gen. Nguyen Van Long, said the amnesty a major policy of the Vietnamese Party and State that demonstrates humanity and leniency towards inmates who show good conduct.

The process of considering the amnesty must be conducted openly, democratically, scientifically, objectively and transparently in accordance with the law.

The consideration process must also ensure that there is absolutely no discrimination between Vietnamese and foreign inmates if they meet requirements.

Currently, there are 751 foreign nationals serving sentences in detention facilities across the country. Competent agencies will review their records and announce the number of foreign nationals eligible for amnesty this year.

The list of prisoners to be pardoned this year will be made public before September 2.

In 2021, more than 3,000 prisoners were granted parole, but only two of them committed crime again. The remaining pardoned prisoners are being managed locally and they are actively reintegrating into the community, according to Maj. Gen. Nguyen Van Long.
