Vietnam and Algeria need to make stronger actions to further promote their economic cooperation and bilateral partnership in line with the two newly emerging economies’ existing potential, said Algerian Foreign Minister Abdelkader Messahel.

In an interview granted to Algeria-based Vietnam News Agency correspondents on the threshold of his working visit to Vietnam from July 13-14, Messahel affirmed his visit aims to enhance the traditional bilateral relations and regular consultation mechanism between the two countries.

This will give a chance for both sides to assess their relationship, especially in economic, trade and investment cooperation, and seek measures to lift the ties to a higher level in accordance with the desire of the two countries’ people, he added.

Regarding the prospect for cooperation between Vietnam and Algeria in the coming time, Messahel said the two sides are enjoying fruitful politic relations.

He, however, noted that the two countries have to do more to foster their economic links.

Two-way trade between Vietnam and Algeria reached only 360 million USD in 2017, and only the Vietnam National Oil and Gas Group (PetroVietnam) is investing in Algeria, he said.

The minister expressed his belief that the two countries can do more and better to bolster the economic links and bilateral partnership.

At the 11th meeting of the Algeria-Vietnam Intergovernmental Committee in November 2017 in Algiers, the two sides set a goal of creating new momentum for pushing the bilateral cooperation, he noted.

Messahel urged the two sides’ ministries and sectors to concretise their commitments set forth in the meeting, and create favourable conditions for promoting trade and investment exchanges between the two nations.

Algeria is pleased with the effectiveness of consultation and coordination of the two countries at international forums, especially the Non-Aligned Movement.

He affirmed Algeria and Vietnam share common views of many international issues, and agree to respect principles of international law as well as the UN Charter and principles such as nations’ right to self-determination, settlement of disputes by peaceful means and diplomatic processes, and no interference in the internal affairs of other nations.
