Vietnam about to deploy its first field hospital in South Sudan

PSNews- Vietnam has reached a memorandum of understanding with the United Nations (UN) on deployment of the country's level-2 field hospital to South Sudan.
  • Vietnam, Japan exchange expertise in peacekeeping mission
  • Int’l conference to be held to improve Vietnam’s peacekeeping capacity
  • UN shows high evaluation for Vietnam’s peacekeeping engagement
  • UN selects Vietnam as training site for peacekeeping forces
  • Vietnam sends seven more officers to UN peacekeeping mission

The memorandum of understanding was inked on  September 26 (New York time) at the UN headquarters by Ambassador Dang Dinh Quy, Head of the Permanent Delegation of Vietnam to the UN, and UN Under-Secretary-General for Field Support Atul Khare. The event witnessed Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People’s Army, Deputy Head of the Defense Ministry's Steering Committee on Vietnam’s participation in UN peacekeeping operations, Senior Lieutenant General Pham Ngoc Minh.

This agreement represents a new development of the bilateral cooperation between Vietnam and the United Nations in the field of peacekeeping. Speaking at the event, Under-Secretary-General for Field Support Atul Khare spoke highly of the Vietnam's efforts in setting up a  quality level-2 field hospital to contribute effectively to the UN peacekeeping mission in South Sudan.

Mr. Atul Khare hoped that Vietnam would make further contribution to that important mission of the UN.

This will be the first time Vietnam will have sent a military medical unit to join UN peacekeeping forces. A send-off ceremony will be organised on October 1 at Tan Son Nhat International Airport, Ho Chi Minh City. 63 military medical staffers of the level-2 field hospital, most of whom are from Military Hospital 175, along with a good deal of medical equipment, facilities and medicines will be flown to South Sudan and to take over the mission a level-2 field hospital of the United Kingdom.

Although South Sudan is a large country, it has poor transport infrastructure. It is very difficult to travel in rural areas during the rainy season that lasts 6-9 months. Therefore,  field hospitals with sufficient medical services for military personnel serving in peacekeeping operations will be very helpful.
