VCCA warns of new types of bank fraud

PSNews - The Vietnam Competition and Consumer Authority (VCCA) under the Ministry of Industry and Trade recently warned citizens of an increase in new types of fraud in the financial and banking sector during the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to VCCA, there are 6 types of fraud, including:

Phishing via email: Fraudsters pretend to be a bank officer and send email asking victims to provide personal information in order to re-login a temporary locked account, or to receive cash reward. Providing information gives fraudsters the opportunity to peer into victim’s personal information and steal money from their bank account.

Phishing via SMS: Fraudsters often send “spoofed” bank SMS to victims with a fake link announcing about system upgrading, gifts and rewards, and ask victims to provide their bank account information on a fake website then steal money from the victim’s bank account.

VCCA warns of new types of bank fraud -0

Phishing via phone call: Fraudsters pretend to be officers of law enforcement agencies to make “spoofed” phone calls to victim, reporting victim’s involvement in criminal offenses, and demanding victims to transfer a large sum of money to a given bank account.

Phishing via fake website: Fraudsters persuade victims to access a fake website that looks similar to an official banking website, then ask victims to enter their bank account information, or provide OTP passwords for transactions via Internet Banking, Mobile Banking. Providing your information gives fraudsters the opportunity to transfer all the money from your bank account to their account.

Phishing via social networks: Fraudsters hijack social network accounts of victims and pretend to be the victims to ask their relatives and friends to transfer money to their account.

Phishing via e-commerce transactions: Fraudsters set up online pages ordering and selling goods. However, after receiving payment or deposit from the victims, the fraudsters and their fake trading pages immediately disappear without delivering the goods as ordered.

VCCA recommends that people should not provide their digital banking information to strange persons or organizations; do not access links or email attachments of unknown origin; do not transfer money at strangers’ request through phone calls or SMS; do not install unauthenticated applications at strangers’ request.
