US Trade Representative Katherine Tai made the statement at a reception hosted by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh in Hanoi on February 14.

She spoke highly of Vietnam’s economic development achievements in recent times, and expressed confidence in the prospect of future cooperation between the two countries.

She briefed her host on the results of her earlier meetings and working sessions with relevant Vietnamese ministries and agencies which she said would help increase mutual understanding and foster bilateral relations moving forward.

Tai also introduced the Biden administration’s priorities and plans for APEC Year 2023, the potential and prospects of the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework for Prosperity (IPEF), in an effort to promote investment quality, build resilient regional supply chains, and sustainable and inclusive economic growth, address common regional challenges, and seize new development opportunities.

PM Pham Minh Chinh for his part affirmed Vietnam wishes to promote the comprehensive partnership with the US in a more substantive, stable and deep manner on the basis of respecting each other’s independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity and political institutions, contributing to peace, stability, cooperation and development in the region and the wider world.

He suggested that the two countries beef up economic-trade-investment relations, expand cooperation to potential fields such as digital transformation, green transformation, sustainable agriculture, energy conversion and environmental protection.

He stressed the need to jointly solve outstanding issues in economic and trade relations, adequately consider issues related to trade remedies and anti-dumping investigation on the basis of ensuring balance, equality and mutual benefit, thus creating favourable conditions for Vietnamese products to make inroads into the US market.

On multilateral cooperation, the PM highly appreciated the US hosting the APEC Year 2023 and affirmed that Vietnam would work closely with the US and other APEC members towards the success of the APEC Year 2023. He also talked about economic integration initiatives, including the IPEF, to ensure the balance of interests of countries and bring practical benefits for the people.
