“It’s wonderful to be back in Hanoi and to celebrate 25 years of US-Vietnam diplomatic relations! Looking forward to my meetings with Prime Minister Phuc and @FMPhamBinhMinh”, writes a post on Secretary Pompeo's Twitter.

The visit was made at the invitation of Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Pham Binh Minh, and appears to result from a last-minute decision.

During his brief visit, the US Secretary of State will meet with Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Pham Binh Minh, and Minister of Public Security To Lam, the US Department of State said in a release.

The visit is “to reaffirm the strength of our comprehensive partnership, celebrate the 25th anniversary of US-Vietnam diplomatic relations, and discuss issues in the South China Sea and Mekong regions of mutual concern”, adds the statement.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh on October 30 morning hosted a welcoming ceremony for and held talks with US Secretary of States Michael Pompeo as part of the latter’s official visit to Vietnam.
