US Secretary of State walks about Hanoi’s streets

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo who was on an official visit to Vietnam, on July 8 took a tour around Hanoi's Old Quarter. This has been Mike Pompeo’s first trip to Vietnam, and also Southeast Asia, since taking office as Secretary of State.

This has been Mike Pompeo’s first trip to Vietnam, and also Southeast Asia, since taking office as Secretary of State. The visit, made at the invitation of Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh, aims to boost bilateral ties and cooperation on politics, diplomacy, economics, trade, investment, defense, security, and in addressing the aftermath of the war.

On July 8, the US Secretary of State had talks with more than 100 US businesses and their partners in Vietnam. He underlined the success of Vietnam in opening up and developing the country since the 1980s.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that Vietnamese leaders are keen on promoting reforms and building relations with other countries, including boosting ties with the United States in the post-war time. As a result, Vietnam has written a remarkable success story about national socio-economic development, and is now one of the fastest growing economies in Southeast Asia.

On the same day, the US Secretary of State also had a quick tour along ancient streets of Hanoi's Old Quarter. After having talks with his host and meeting with Vietnamese leaders, the US Secretary of State concluded his visit on July 9.
