U.S. Ambassador and the son of General Vo Nguyen Giap to pay a visit to Dien Bien Phu

U.S. Ambassador Ted Osius, Leon Fuerth - former national security adviser to former Vice President Al Gore and the son of General Giap paid a visit to Dien Bien from September 6-7, underlining the importance of education and history.

During the two-day visit, the U.S Ambassador to Vietnam Ted Osius met the Head of Dien Bien provincial People's Committee Mua A Son, talked with the local primary and high school students and attended the performance with the outreach staffs of HIV/AIDS community.  

Mr. Vo Hong Nam – son of General Giap has shared with Mr. Ted Osius the significant parts of Vietnamese history while visiting the Vo Nguyen Giap's headquarters of Dien Bien Phu campaign and command bunker of De Castries.

"Vietnam had a long, proud history of resistance to invaders and it is appreciated that the Vietnamese and international citizens study about it. It’s my great pleasure to be here and listen to the stories sharing by the son of General Giap. That is not only about history but also his family", Ambassador Osius said.

In addition, Ambassador Osius met the students, teachers and leaders of High School for gifted students Le Quy Don, in which there are 2 people returning from the U.S embassy supporting programs. Moreover, Ambassador Osius spent his time to talk about study abroad and ways to success.

Visiting Muong Phang primary school, Mr. Ted Osius and Mr Nam discussed about the importance of cooperation partnership in improving Vietnam education system. The family of General Vo Nguyen Giap, Boeing corporation, the American Veteran Fund in Vietnam and Dien Bien provincial People's Committee have joined hands in investing and equipping computers, internet and clean water for such primary school.

Ambassador Osius also met the outreach staffs who help HIV/AIDS patients improve their quality of life with the support of  the U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). Finally, he attended the cultural performance of Thai and H’mong, aiming to raise awareness of HIV/AIDS for communities in remote areas.
