The United Nations will continue to pay attention to and support Vietnam’s development priorities, visiting UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres assured State President Nguyen Xuan Phuc during their talks in Hanoi on October 21.

Guterres said he expects Vietnam will further promote its role and position at the United Nations, contributing to addressing global problems and challenges.

The UN supports Vietnam’s endeavor to host major international events and conferences on sea and ocean in the coming time, he said.

The Secretary General highly appreciated Vietnam’s positive contributions in recent years to the common work of the United Nations in all key fields, including successfully assuming its role as non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for the 2020-2021 term and deploying forces to participate in UN peacekeeping operations.

He also singled out Vietnam for its outstanding performance in the COVID-19 fight and economic recovery, and suggested Vietnam should share its experiences with other countries worldwide.

In response, State President Nguyen Xuan Phuc voiced Vietnam’s strong support for the UN’s central role in global governance and in leading multilateral efforts to address common challenges.

Vietnam is ready to contribute its best to the common work of the United Nations for peace, security and sustainable development in the world, he assured his guest.

The President requested that the United Nations continue to pay attention to and support Vietnam in responding to the COVID-19 pandemic, formulating development policies, mobilizing international resources for implementing a long-term recovery strategy, while effectively implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and perfecting the building of a law-governed state.

Vietnam is actively implementing its climate commitment to achieve net zero emissions by 2050, and it hopes to receive additional UN assistance and support for this endeavor, he told Guterres.

Exchanging views on major regional and international issues, both host and guest stressed the need to consolidate multilateralism with the United Nations playing a central role and upholding international law compliance, solidarity, cooperation in the context of unpredictable changes in the world.

The two sides agreed to strengthen the UN-ASEAN cooperation and promote ASEAN’s central role in solving regional problems, including East Sea disputes and the situation in Myanmar.
