The meeting took place on the fringes of a two-day conference titled “The National Assembly (NA) and sustainable development goals (SDGs)”, opened in the city on the same day.

The UN official told his host that the UN pledges to assist and share experience with Vietnam and hoped that the two sides will soon establish a working group to conduct field trips to the northwestern region, especially Son La and Hoa Binh provinces to study local ethnic minority communities.

Malhotra emphasized climate change response as a top priority and the UN has worked out short-term action plans for it and will work together with the Vietnamese Government in dealing with the challenge. The UN’s Green Climate Fund is ready to support related short-term solutions, including the building of houses for Vietnamese people in flood-hit locations

The UN desires to support Vietnam in developing a sustainable and inclusive economy, he added.

Phong said that the NA’s recent sixth session had discussed investment and growth contents that closely followed the country’s commitments to the UN’s SDGs, noting that the NA always receive assistance from UN’s relevant agencies and organizations in Vietnam.

Vietnam is facing challenges in mobilizing funds for climate change adaptation and difficulties in implementing its investment policies on infrastructure, electricity, water, and transport development in areas inhabited by ethnic minorities, particularly mountainous, border, and island areas, she said.

The NA Vice Chairwoman said she hopes that the UN and UN Development Programme (UNDP) would support Vietnam in assessing the impacts of climate change and propose urgent measures to deal with the issue along coastal areas from Ho Chi Minh City to Ca Mau.

She expressed her wish that UNDP will work closely with Vietnam on capacity-building programs to help NA deputies improve their skills and knowledge on international law so that they can do strategic research to deal with international issues.
