The election is within the framework of the 78th session of the ESCAP underway from May 23 to May 27, in Bangkok, Thailand.

The Statistical Institute for Asia and the Pacific (SIAP) is a regional institution of the ESCAP, located in Chiba City, Japan. Its main missions are to organize statistical training courses, connect and cooperate with international organizations, development partners and release statistical information aimed at serving socio-economic development of member countries.

Meanwhile, CSAM founded in 2012, based in Beijing, China. Its predecessor was the Regional Network for Agricultural Mechanization, established in 1977.

The organization aims to increase agricultural productivity, improve rural living standards and reduce poverty through mechanization of sustainable agriculture. Its specific activities include strengthening technical cooperation among its 62 member countries and territories through information exchange and knowledge sharing, research coordination, and technology transfer for the attainment of the internationally agreed development goals, including the Millennium Development Goals in the Asia-Pacific region.

The newly-elected positions of the General Statistics Office and VIAEP to SIAP and CSAM provide a good opportunity for Vietnam to strengthen cooperation with other members in the field of statistics and agricultural mechanization, thereby contributing to fulfilling the national development goals and enhancing Vietnam’s international status.

The wins also reflect ESCAP member countries’ appreciation of Vietnam's ability to contribute to the region.
