He also highlighted strong developments in Vietnam-US relations over the past 25 years.
He highly appreciated achievements in the bilateral relations and cooperation, especially in the fields of diplomacy, people-to people exchange, politics, defense and security, trade and mitigation of war legacy in recent years. The US National Security Advisor also applauded that the two sides have well organized many activities to celebrate 25 years of US-Vietnam diplomatic relations amid further complicated developments in the COVID-19 pandemic.
He thanked to Vietnam for its effective assistance in finding American soldiers missing in action, and pledged to continue implementing projects on Agent Orange / dioxin decontamination, unexploded ordnance (UXO) clearance, supporting people with disabilities, and assisting the Vietnamese side in searching for the remains of fallen Vietnamese soldiers in the war.
The US attaches great importance to and wishes to promote a stable and sustainable comprehensive partnership with Vietnam on the basis of mutual respect for each other's political institutions. He emphasized that the US wants Vietnam to be a “strong, independent and prosperous” country.
O’Brien congratulated Vietnam on its outstanding performance as the ASEAN Chair 2020 and a non-permanent member of the UNSC, and affirmed that the US supports the central role of ASEAN and will continue to strengthen and develop the ASEAN-US strategic partnership and the Mekong-US partnership.
Earlier, the U.S. National Security Adviser paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc, met with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh, Minister of National Defense Ngo Xuan Lich and had talks with Minister of Public Security To Lam. His three-day visit to Viet Nam was part of the activities to mark the 25th anniversary of Viet Nam-U.S. diplomatic relations.
