Sweden hands over historic documentary to Vietnam Film Institute on reunification day

As Vietnam celebrates its historic victory and reunification, the Embassy of Sweden in Vietnam, in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, held a ceremony to officially hand over the documentary Victory Vietnam to the Vietnamese Film Institute. Directed by Swedish filmmaker Bo Öhlén, the film honors the historic events of April 30, 1975, and highlights the strong friendship between Sweden and Vietnam.

At the award ceremony held on April 25, Mr. Oscar Staffas Edström, Head of Trade and Promotion Department of the Embassy of Sweden in Vietnam emarked: “This documentary reflects the deep friendship that Sweden and Vietnam have shared during important moments of history. Through the lens of this film, we see not only Vietnam’s courage and resilience but also the enduring human values of peace and unity that connect us all. As we hand over Victory Vietnam to the Vietnam Film Institute, we hope it continues to inspire future generations to remember the lessons of the past and work towards a future built on mutual respect, understanding, and cooperation. Our shared connection is our foundation building our current and future partnership”.

Victory Vietnam directed by Swedish filmmaker Bo Öhlén and filmed during April 30, 1975, captures the lively and emotional atmosphere in Stockholm on the day Saigon was liberated, marking the end of the Vietnam War. The film showcases moments of the Swedish people celebrating Vietnam's victory, singing songs of peace, raising banners in support of the National Liberation Front of South Vietnam and expressing deep solidarity with the people of Vietnam.

Interspersed with scenes of parades and heartfelt speeches, the film conveys a deep appreciation for the Vietnamese people's resilient struggle and highlights the international solidarity movement's continued political and material support.

The Director of the Vietnam Film Institute, Ms. Le Thi Ha, emphasized the significance of the occasion: “We are truly honored to welcome this documentary into our archives. It is not only a valuable historical record but also a profound symbol of international solidarity and shared values that continue to inspire us today.”

Joining online, Bo Öhlén shared his reflections on the creation of the documentary and its message. He said, “When I filmed Victory Vietnam, I wanted to capture not just the historic events of April 30, 1975, but also the powerful emotions and solidarity that resonated across Sweden. This film is a tribute to the Vietnamese people’s courage and their fight for independence, as well as the heartfelt support they received from people worldwide.”

At the award ceremony, Swedish filmmaker Bo Öhlén shared about the filmmaking process through an online presentation.
