State President Luong Cuong attended a ceremony to inaugurate Lach Huyen International Container Terminals No.3 & No.4 at the Port of Hai Phong in the northern city of Hai Phong on May 13.

The event was among a series of activities in celebration of Hai Phong’s 70th Liberation Day (May 13, 1955-2025), and the 30th founding anniversary of the Vietnam Maritime Cooperation (April 29, 1995-2025).

The project to build container terminals No. 3 and No. 4 was approved by the Prime Minister under Decision No. 1323/QD-TTg dated October 9, 2019, with the Port of Hai Phong JSC as its investor. This project not only represents a new step forward in the competitiveness and global connectivity of Vietnam's logistics system but also serves as a strategic link in the national seaport development master plan by 2030, with a vision to 2045, aiming to realise the goal of making Vietnam a strong and prosperous maritime nation.

It includes two terminals with a total length of 750 meters and a depth of minus 16 meters, capable of accommodating mother ships of 165,000 DWT (14,000 TEUs) and reduced-load ships of 200,000 DWT, as well as barge berths and advanced loading and unloading equipment systems. Notably, these terminals are operated under the Green & Smart Ports model, applying modern technology and automation to meet environmental standards, conserve energy, and ensure sustainable development in line with global trends.

The commissioning of the terminals completes a system of six terminals at Lach Huyen Port, meeting the cargo transportation needs of not only Hai Phong but also the entire northern region. The cargo throughput at the Port of Hai Phong has consistently increased by 12-15% annually, reaching 190 million tonnes in 2024 and is projected to hit 212 million tonnes in 2025. Lach Huyen Port is planned to function as a gateway and international transshipment hub that is able to accommodate container ships of up to 18,000 TEUs, general cargo and bulk ships up to 100,000 tonnes, liquid/gas ships up to 150,000 tonnes, and passenger ships up to 225,000 GT.

Addressing the inaugural ceremony, Permanent Vice Chairman of the municipal People’s Committee Le Anh Quan emphasised that this is a significant event for the Port of Hai Phong, the Vietnam Maritime Corporation, and the development of Hai Phong city.

He affirmed that Hai Phong is committed to always accompanying and create all possible conditions for investors in the construction and operation of the remaining terminals at Lach Huyen Port and Nam Do Son Port, as well as in investing in high-tech industrial zones, modern port and logistics services, in line with the green growth, circular economy, and sustainable development models.

On this occasion, the State President presented gifts to the staff and workers of the Port of Hai Phong.
