Senior leaders launch fundraising campaigns to help flood victims

HANOI -  Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong extended his sympathy to flood victims in central Vietnam at a fundraising ceremony in Hanoi on October 18.

He and other senior party leaders donated their one-day salary and the Party Central Committee’s Office raised a total of US$20,000 after the launch ceremony.

President Tran Dai Quang, Vice President Dang Thi Ngoc Thinh, and all employees of the Presidential Office donated money at least equivalent to their one-day salary to help people in the flood-hit areas.

Earlier, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc appealed to organizations and individuals to make donations to assist people affected by storms and floods in the central region.

“On behalf of the government, I urge organizations and individuals nationwide to share the burden with people in flood areas. I invite donations to help our compatriots in need," the cabinet leade said at a fundraising ceremony the same day in Hanoi.

At the National Radio Centre in Hanoi, Radio the Voice of Vietnam (VOV) launched a campaign called “For our beloved central region.” 

VOV President Nguyen The Ky called on all employees to continue to help flood victims in the central region.

“Social resources are now very important as well as the State resources. Being journalists, we should show our awareness of and deep sympathy for the flood victims. I urge the prompt broadcasting of this fundraising campaign to make it widespread and effective," he said.

At the fundraising launch ceremony, VOV employees donated money at least equivalent to their one-day salary.  

Also on October 18, similar campaigns were held nationwide. The Vietnam Red Cross Society and the National Humanitarian Information Portal 1400 activated a program of sending SMS to raise funds for the people the central region affected by floods. The program will close on December 18.

Torrential rains and heavy floods have left 35 people dead, 4 missing and damaged more than 120,000 houses and roads, mostly in Quang Binh and Ha Tinh provinces.
