There were 26 road accidents on the first day of the April 30 and May 1 holidays, killing 14 people and injuring 12 others, the Traffic Police Department under the Ministry of Public Security reported.
The number of accidents was up 37 percent year-on-year but fatalities were down 12 percent and injuries down 20 percent.
On the first day, police handled 3,518 traffic violations, collecting 4.2 billion VND (179,700 USD) in fines, while 86 waterway violations brought in 139 million VND (5,900 USD) in fines.
Traffic congestion was found on major routes to Hanoi such as Thang Long Avenue - Tran Duy Hung - Khuat Duy Tien, National Highway No. 5, roads to Thanh Tri Bridge, and the Hanoi - Bac Giang and Hanoi - Hai Phong Expressways, and the intersection of Highway No. 8 - Ha Duy Phien from HCM City to Binh Duong province.
