Red Journey 2017 to help deal with shortage of blood supply

PSNews - During peak days this summer, there remained only 7,000 blood units at the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion, just enough for five days of supply to 170 hospitals, which was highly alarming.

  • Can Tho Police actively join blood donation program "Red of Tay Do"
  • Ca Mau Provincial Police join blood donation day
  • People and Police of Phu Quoc join blood donation day
  • Special figures at blood donation festival named “Summer of Kindness”

That was stated by Prof. Nguyen Anh Tri, Director of the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion, at the press conference introducing the Red Journey 2017 on July 10.

The professor shared that the amount of blood reserved at the institute on July 7 was just 12,000 blood units, much lower than required. Meanwhile, everyday the institute must provide about 800 - 1,000 blood units on average to various hospitals; in some days, the number even climbed up to 1,900 units.

The reason for the lack of blood is due to the reduction in the donated blood from the five blood-receiving establishments, namley Central Military Hospital 108, Military Hospital 103, Hospital 198, Viet Duc Hospital and the National Pediatrics Hospital, meeting only 50% of treatment need. Therefore, the Red Journey 2017, a major blood donation campaign in Vietnam, has an important role to play.

The blood shortage still happens in various provinces and cities nationwide. The Red Journey will contribute to meeting the urgent need of blood for treatment at various hospitals and make a good and widespread influence on the public, raising people’s awareness of blood donation.

This year’s Red Journey will be held in 28 provinces and cities and is expected to collect some 45,000 units of blood. In July 2017, the campaign is expected to help solve the shortage of blood thanks to the current promising blood donation sources.
