At the press briefing, French Ambassador to Vietnam Nicolas Warney stated that, the third metro line in Hanoi (Nhon - Hanoi Railway Station) is scheduled to start commercial operation of the elevated section in late 2021, while the construction of the underground tracks will commence in the first quarter of 2021.

French Ambassador to Vietnam Nicolas Warnery said that, the first train (out of 10 trains) for the Nhon-Hanoi Station line which departed from Dunkerque Port in France and arrived at the Nhon Depot in Hanoi marks a critical stage for the success of the project.

Before being put into official operation in 2021, the project will deploy a trial run for the elevated section while tunneling for the underground section in Hoai Duc District. The line will contribute to a significant reduction in CO2 emissions, thus contributing to the fight against climate change.

Head of the Hanoi Metropolitan Railway Management Board, Nguyen Cao Minh, said at the press briefing that the Nhon-Hanoi Station line is one of the nine metro lines planned for Hanoi, which are expected to become the backbone of the traffic system in Hanoi. He noted that the overall progress of the project has reached nearly 66%, of which the progress in construction and equipment installation for the overhead section has reached approximately 81%.

“Our goal is to put the elevated section into operation by the second half of 2021. We are committed to making full use of our resources to ensure progress in the next phases of the project”, Minh underscored.

Once ready, the Nhon – Hanoi Station metro line is expected to serve more than 23,000 passengers per hour. The line is planned to have 10 France-manufactured trains with a capacity of 950 passengers each.

The trains are expected to be operated at 35km per hour on average and 80km per hour maximum, the same speed as metros in Paris, Berlin and other Asian cities.

As announced, the colour of the trains is inspired by the colour of Vietnamese dragon fruit and yellow rice field that was warmly applauded by the public following a survey in September 2018.

The project's investment of about 30.1 trillion VND (1.29 billion USD) comes from official development assistance of the French Development Agency and loans from the French Government.

The urban railway line No 3, connecting Nhon area and Hanoi Station, will run through Nam Tu Liem, Bac Tu Liem, Cau Giay, Ba Dinh, Dong Da and Hoan Kiem districts.
