At the 18th National Junior Vovinam Championship, which will run until October 24, athletes are competing for 78 sets of medals across 32 categories of performance and 46 divisions of combat across three age groups, including 12 to 15, 16 to 18, and 19 to 21.

Each competitor is permitted to take part in a maximum of three categories. The championships is to select young martial artists who can make the step up and join the national team.

Vovinam is a martial art that is practiced both with and without weapons. It is based on a mixture of both hard and soft motions and actions. Indeed, the martial art technique includes training the body and mind, while it also utilises hand motions, elbows, kicks, as well as escape and levering methods.

Vovinam is the most popular style of martial art in Vietnam, as well as around the world. The Vietnam Vovinam Federation confirmed there were more than 2.5 million practising the martial art in 70 countries and territories. The strong growth of the art form can be seen through the establishment of the world federation, as well as continental federations in Asia, Europe and Africa.

Apart from Vietnamese, regional, continental and world championships, Vovinam has been part of the Asian Beach Games and Asian Indoor Games, among others.
