Nearly 100 people killed by road accidents during holidays

Traffic accidents killed 96 people and injured 96 others during the five-day holiday which lasted from April 27 to May 1, according to the National Traffic Safety Committee.

Of the total 137 accidents happened in the period, 135 were recorded in the roads, with 94 people losing their lives, while another two were hit by trains on crossing, said Khuat Viet Hung, the committee’s permanent vice president.

On May 1 alone, there were 26 road accidents nationwide which killed 16 people and injured 17 others.

Two women were killed on the spot when a car and a motorbike collided in Hanoi’s Kim Lien Tunnel. The driver of the car tested positive for alcohol.

Over the five days, traffic and local police had detected and dealt with nearly 12,000 violations, collected fines totaling 15.2 billion VND (about 680,000 USD), and detained 138 automobiles, more than 2,200 motorbikes and confiscated more than 2,200 licences.

More than 2,300 violations cases happened on the water with total fines of 984 million VND (43,700 USD).

The National Traffic Safety Committee also received more than 50 phone calls of complaints of overloading of passengers and overcharging on coaches during the holidays.

The committee coordinated with the traffic police to stop and impose fines for coach companies.

During the holidays, hospitals in Hanoi had more than 7,700 emergency cases for treatments of traffic accidents, daily and labour accidents.

Meanwhile, hospitals in HCM City dealt with nearly 163,400 emergency cases.
