Local COVID-19 cases with severe prognosis rises to 120, with 25 in critical condition

Vietnam currently has 95 COVID-19 patients with severe prognosis, making up 3.1% of the overall number of cases nationwide, including 25 who remain in a critical condition, according to information provided by the Ministry of Health’s Treatment Subcommittee.
  • COVID-19: 24 further community cases confirmed, with 23 in Bac Giang hotspot
  • COVID-19: Vietnam records 40 more community cases in five localities

Of the 25 critical patients, a total of 21 are now relying on invasive oxygen machines, whilst the remaining four have been put on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) machines.

Furthermore, there are an additional 109 other severe cases who require oxygen, whilst nine individuals need to use non-invasive mechanical ventilation in order to help them to breath.

Roughly 1,438 people, equivalent to 47.6% of all local COVID-19 patients, are asymptomatic, while 1,339 cases, equal to 44.4% of the total, have shown mild clinical manifestations, stated the Treatment Subcommittee.

To date the country has successfully been able to cure a total of 2,881 patients of COVID-19, whilst a total of 45 cases have died from the SARS-CoV-2 virus, the majority of whom had been suffering from a range of serious underlying health conditions.

According to details given by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Luong Ngoc Khue, director of the Department of Medical Examination and Treatment under the Ministry of Health, the local healthcare system should pay greater attention to those showing few symptoms, with these people requiring treatment in safe isolation places with close monitoring.

During the latest wave of the pandemic, the impact of the mutant strain originating from India has led to the nation recording several deaths. A concerning feature of this wave is the impact the virus has had on young patients, with symptoms emerging at a more rapid pace than before, making it difficult for people to access the appropriate treatment in time, Prof. Khue noted.
