Irish President visits Quang Tri

During his ongoing state visit to Vietnam, Irish President Michael D. Higgins and his wife visited Quang Tri province on November 10.

Within the framework of the visit, Chairman of the Quang Tri Provincial People’s Committee Nguyen Duc Chinh met Ireland’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Charles Flanagan and signed a Memorandum of Understanding in which they consented to bolster cooperation in the coming time.

t the meeting, Chinh said he hopes the Irish government would continue to support the province to achieve its development goals during the period 2017-2020 and consider aid for ethnic and mountain regions in the province.

Chinh called on Ireland to help Quang Tri province to deal with the war’s legacy and to invest in local infrastructure, tourism, services, aquaculture, coffee, and rubber production.

Mr Flanagan hailed Quang Tri’s coordination with the Irish Embassy in implementing the Irish government’s assistant programmes and promised to assist Vietnam in general and Quang Tri in particular to reduce poverty and overcome the legacy of the war.
