Hundreds of experts participated in International Seminar on South China Sea

PSNews-The Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam (DAV), Foundation for East Sea Studies (FESS) and Vietnam Lawyers Association (VLA) co-organized the 8th International Conference themed “South China Sea: Cooperation for Regional Security and Development”.

200 delegates of the conference included 60 international scholars, 70 Vietnamese experts and 20 participants from 15 foreign representative agencies to Vietnam. 35 reporters of various domestic and international news agencies covered the event.

The 8th International Conference on the South China Sea (also known as East Sea) was organized amid various new developments in the East Sea attracting deep concern of the world. This served as an opportunity for Vietnamese and international scholars and experts to share information and review recent happenings and impacts on the East Sea, as well as to discuss possibilities to promote cooperation in the region.

Some 30 reports were delivered in 7 working sessions of the conference,themed: International Law and the East Sea; Political Economy of the East Sea; Issues and Prospects; Security, Politics and Diplomacy;Maritime Interactions and Coordination;and Mechanism to settle tension on the East Sea.

Speakers focused on discussing the situation of the East Sea in different aspects, from politico-diplomacyto legal issues, in order to seek opportunities and initiatives to promote understanding and cooperation in the regionon the basis of the international law.

A special session was exclusively organized for delegates from Naval and Marine Law Enforcement Forces of regional countries to share experiences and methods to interact and cooperate in the field.

Apart from the main agendas of the conference, the organizers also held the Young Leaders Programme (YLP) drawing 8 young researchers from 7 nations with the aim of shaping a network of young researchers on the East Sea, and discussing new cooperation initiatives for peace and development in the East Sea.

Before the first discussion, on behalf of the FESS and the DAV, Dr. Tran Phuong Thuy introduced to the participants the website https://maritimeisssues.com, that publishes latest studies of international scholars on security, politics, economics and laws related to the sea.
