Hanoi steps up cooperation with Washington DC

A delegation of Hanoi capital led by Vice Secretary of the municipal Party Committee and Chairman of the People’s Council Nguyen Ngoc Tuan on August 16 had a working session with the US’ administration of Washington, D.C.

The working visit by the Hanoi delegation took place amid both nations celebrating the 10th anniversary of their comprehensive partnership.

Hanoi and Washington D.C., as political and administrative centers, will make important contributions to strengthening cooperation and friendship between the two countries, the municipal leader said.

The two administrations need to carry out more external activities, intensify contacts and delegation exchange, and strengthen investment, trade and tourism promotion activities along with cross-cultural and people-to-people exchanges such as organizing the art program "Hanoi Days in Washington D.C, Tuan went on to say.

In response, Kimberly Bassett, secretary of state of the District of Columbia proposed continuing to ramp up cooperation between the two capitals, and conduction negotiation to sign a memorandum of cooperation in the coming time.

The two administrations need to set up a communication channel and assign agencies for foreign affairs to exchange, agree and make proposal on the early signing of a MoU on cooperation.

 The Washington D.C. administration will create all conditions for Hanoi businesses to carry out trade promotion, import and export activities and incentivize US businesses to invest in Hanoi, she added.

At the meeting, the two sides also briefed each other on the socio-economic situation of the two cities in recent years, experience sharing in the organization of government apparatus, supervision mechanism for State agencies’ activities, the decentralization of socio-economic management, urban infrastructure planning and management, the environment, smart city building, tourism development, social security policies.

During the working visit, the Hanoi delegation also worked with officials and staff of the Vietnamese Embassy in the US. Vietnamese Ambassador to the US Nguyen Quoc Dung highly appreciated the purpose and the significance of the Hanoi delegation's business trip.

Chairman of the Hanoi People's Council Nguyen Ngoc Tuan informed about the results of the working sessions in the US and the proposals of the Washington D.C administration on negotiating and signing a memorandum of understanding on cooperation with Hanoi.

He also informed the socio-economic situation of the capital in recent years and the fields Hanoi is calling for investment cooperation.

The Hanoi leader commented on the development of Vietnam-US relations over the past time, especially in the context of the two countries celebrating the 10th anniversary of their comprehensive partnership (2013-2023). This will open up numerous opportunities for stronger comprehensive cooperation in the coming time, especially in the fields of investment, trade, tourism, imports and exports, urban development, transportation, and the environment.

He also suggested that Hanoi capital research and implement cooperation activities, cultural and people-to-people exchanges between Hanoi and US cities.

On behalf of municipal leaders, Chairman of the Hanoi People's Council Nguyen Ngoc Tuan suggested that the Vietnamese Embassy in the US continue to pay attention to and coordinate in promoting the image of Hanoi capital with international friends, enhancing friendly relations between Hanoi city and localities, while helping Hanoi strengthen investment promotion, exchange and cooperation across a variety of fields.
