Further investigation into wine with methanol poison in Hanoi

PSNews-Senior Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Xuan Truong, Head of Investigation Agency under the Hanoi Municipal Police signed Decision 68 to prosecute a criminal case named "Violation of regulations on food hygiene and safety" under Article 244 of the Penal Code.

According to an official at the Hanoi Municipal Police, in response to a rising number of methanol poisoning cases in Hanoi, the Director of the Hanoi Municipal Police has assigned the Criminal Police Division (PC45) and the Environmental Police Division (PC49) to investigate the producers and traders of sorts of “wine” containing methanol and crack down on the networks under the laws.

According to the media reports, during the Lunar New Year holiday, Bach Mai Hospital’s Poison Control Centre treated 20 patients.

Poisoned patients came from different localities, but lived and worked in Hanoi. They bought and drank wine from certain bars and shops in Hanoi. Particularly, in the case happening on March 10, the Bach Mai Hospital’s Poison Control Centre received 7 patients, all are students of the Hai Duong College of Pedagogy (based in Mai Dich, Cau Giay district, Hanoi).

 A patient with less methanol effect said that they bought 1.5 litre of wine of unknown origin for their party on the evening of March 8. The next morning, some of them suffered symptoms: headache, blurred eyesight and vomiting blood. They were hospitalized at 198 Hospital then transferred to Bach Mai Hospital. 

Of the cases of methanol poisoning, many may suffer coma or mental damage, the Bach Mai Center must conduct emergency dialysis to discharge methanol from the body.
