A free Vietnamese-language course for Vietnamese children opened in Ostrava city, North Moravia of the Czech Republic on September 22.

The course is the first of its kind held in the European country under a State-run program to teach the mother tongue for Vietnamese children abroad, aiming to enhance the quality of the teaching and learning of the language among Vietnamese community in other countries.

With funding and support from the Czech Republic’s Ministry of Education and the local government, it gathers nearly 90 students who are divided into two classes from the age of 7-12 and 12-18. They will take the classes once per week within one year, using textbooks published by the Vietnamese Ministry of Education and Training designed exclusively for Vietnamese people abroad, along with documents from the Czech-Vietnam language center.

Teachers of the course were trained in Hanoi in August this year.

According to Trinh Tan, Chairman of the Vietnamese Association in North Moravia and Ostrava, who is also head of the organizing board of the course, the course aims to give Vietnamese children a better understanding of the Vietnamese culture and become closer to the homeland.

Over the years, special attention has been paid to the teaching and learning of the Vietnamese language among the Vietnamese community in the Czech Republic, contributing to preserving the traditional culture among the community, especially the second and third generations, while helping reinforcing the friendship between Vietnam and the host country.
