Doctors found “Living blood bank”

PSNews- According to the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion, the need for blood transfusion at various hospitals in Hanoi and other northern provinces is high due to an increasing number of patients to be hospitalized.

  • “Red Sunday” – voluntary blood donation campaign launched in Hanoi
  • Over 500 public security students join blood donation day
  • Precious blood donation saves lives

As of February 10, the institute had only 1,324 reserved blood units, which are mainly of types B and AB while the stockpile of blood type O and A dropped to an alarming level.

Due to the long Tet holiday, the blood donation by students was not held, leading to a lack of blood supply, especially the scarcity of platelet.

The institute needs some 700-900 blood units per day for medical treatment on average while the blood supply only satisfies about 10% of the actual need.

The number of patients hospitalized in the Hematology and Blood Transfusion Ward of Bach Mai hospital a week after Tet soared, and most blood reserves have been used. Despite receiving 1,200 blood units from the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion, a lot of patients still had to wait for blood for medical treatment.

In response to the rising number of patients in need of blood for treatment, many doctors and other staff members of the institute volunteered to donate blood, said Doctor Nguyen Anh Tri, Director of the National Institute for Hematology and Blood Transfusion.

“Donating blood after Tet has become a tradition of our institute, and especially some of our staff have donated blood 70 times,” said Mr. Tri, expressing his pride of the Institute’s “Living blood bank”.

In the time to come, two more major hospitals will mobilize and encourage their doctors and other staff members to donate blood for medical treatment.

The “Xuan hong” festival, a nationwide blood donation campaign, to be held on February 18, will help ease the lack of blood for medical purposes.
