PSNews - The Da Nang Municipal Youth Union on June 2 held a ceremony to respond to the World Environment Day (May 5). The event attracted the participation of young people of Da Nang, both local people and foreign visitors.

Participating in the event, hundreds of young people of Da Nang have organized many practical activities such as: exchanging garbage for gifts, designing popularizing banner, hosting recycled fashion show, displaying recycled products from garbage and waste materials.

Vietnam is ranked 17th out of 109 countries with a high level of plastic waste pollution in the world. According to statistics, each Vietnamese household often releases more than one plastic bag per day. Thus, there will be millions of plastic bags used and discharged into the environment every day. This is a “burden” for the environment, which leads to a disaster that environmental experts call “white pollution”.

According to a representative of the organizing board, the event played an important role in popularizing the sense of environmental protection for everyone, especially for young people, contributing to protecting our earth and our own lives.

The same day, the Da Nang Municipal People’s Committee also held a ceremony to launch the “Action month for environment” with the theme of “Air pollution and our acts”.

As reported, over the recent past, Da Nang has reaped positive outcomes relating to environment protection, evidenced by the participation of economic, social and political organisations as well as the community.

However, the city will further focus efforts on improving the quality of the air environment and perfecting the urban and rural infrastructure, along with the intensification of environment protection movements.

Under a plan of the Da Nang Municipal People’s Committee, the action month for the environment will last through July 31 with various activities which will create a chance for voluntary organisations and environment clubs to continue multiply the model all over the city.

In Hoi An, an ancient town near Da Nang, many meaningful activities took place on June 2 to mark the World Bicycle Day (June 3) and World Environment Day.

The event, which was organized by Hoi An People’s Committee in cooperation with German Development Cooperation (GIZ) and Health Bridge Canada, aimed to encourage the participation of local people by detailing how the social, environmental and health benefits of cycling reflect the values of Hoi An – a World Heritage city.

During the event, a cycling parade and the award of the Medal of Merit to Hoi An City’s Cycling Ambassador combined to inspire people to make cycling part of their daily lives.

Earlier, on May 31, the Hoi An People’s Committee approved the Bicycle Transportation Development Master Plan, which was developed by a multi-sector Working Group with technical support from international experts.

“The approved Master Plan has a vision to make Hoi An a safe, convenient and connected City. We hope the City will be more environmentally friendly with better air quality and a safer, more attractive environment,” said Mr Nguyen Van Lanh, Deputy Head of the Working Group and Head of Hoi An City’s Information and Culture Unit.
