COVID-19: Vietnam records 111 more cases over 12 hours, half in HCM City

As many as 111 people have tested positive for the SARS-CoV-2 virus in three localities in Vietnam during the past 12 hours, with nearly half of the caseload detected in Ho Chi Minh City alone.
  • 68 more community cases recorded at midday, with 48 in Bac Giang epicenter
  • Vietnam records 40 more locally transmitted COVID-19 cases

Fifty-one cases were recorded in Ho Chi Minh City closely linked to the outbreak at the Revival Ekklesia Mission Vietnam, a Christian congregation in Go Vap district.

The city is speeding up contact tracing and extensive testing in an effort to earluy detect and quarantine positive cases. The city is applying social distancing in order to break up the largest ever chain of virus transmission.

Close to 200 cases have been confirmed since the first case was detected at the religious sect on May 26. Many other cases linked to the sect were also found in nearby localities such as bac Lieu, Binh Duong, Long An and Dak Lak.

The Ministry of Health (MoH) also said in its COVID-19 update at 06.00am on June 1 that an additional 45 cases have been logged in Bac Giang, and 15 others in Bac Ninh, both are in the north and the largest COVID-19 hotspots in Vietnam.

Th MoH data show the virus, since its emergence in late April, has spread to 34 cities and provinces nationwide, with 4,356 cases confirmed. Bac Giang is the hardest hit locality, registering more than 2,200 cases.
