COVID-19: Daily caseload hits 15,377, including 1,000 in Hanoi

As many as 15,377 people have tested positive for the SARS-CoV-2 virus in 60 cities and provinces across Vietnam during the past 24 hours, the Ministry of Health (MoH) reported in its coronavirus update on December 13.

Hanoi capital topped localities in infection numbers nationwide, registering 1,000 new cases on a single day for the first time.

The municipal administration raised the COVID-19 alert level in Dong Da district – the largest coronavirus hotspot in the city – to orange. It requested local residents to restrict outgoings and food eateries to offer takeaways to halt the spread of the virus.

Elsewhere, the majority of the newly detected cases were in the south, with Binh Phuoc surprisingly recording the highest number at 998. Other localities registering hundreds of new cases include Tay Ninh, Ho Chi Minh City, Ben Tre, Ca mau, Dong Thap, Can Tho, Vinh Long, Tra Vinh and Soc Trang.

The outbreak remains complicated in the north with dozens to hundreds of new cases detected in Hung Yen, Lang Son, Ha Giang, Vinh Phuc, Hai Duong, Thai Binh, and Quang Ninh provinces.

Official data from the MoH also show that 8,891 cases were documented in the community during the past 24 hours. About 1,200 patients were discharged from hospital and 242 patients died of the disease and underlying illnesses.

As of 06pm on December 13 Vietnam has detected 1,428,428 COVID-19 cases since the start of the first outbreak in January 2020, ranking 32nd out of 223 countries and territories worldwide.

Of the infected patients, 1,055,912 have been discharged from hospital after making a full recovery from the disease.

As many as 28,081 patients have died of the virus, making up 2% of the total number of infections. 

Nearly 133 million vaccine doses have been administered nationwide, with close to 58 million people getting their second shot.
