COVID-19: Cumulative caseload surpasses 65,000 mark in Vietnam

As many as 2,787 people have tested positive for the SARS-CoV-2 virus in 23 cities and provinces across Vietnam during the past 12 hours, raising the cumulative tally of infections in the country to 65,607.

Taking nasal swabs for COVID-19 testing in Vietnam

Of the new patients, 2,775 were detected locally, mostly in southern localities, according to the Ministry of Health (MoH) in its 06.00am on July 21.

Ho Chi Minh City led all localities in new infection numbers, registering 1,739 alone, followed by Binh Duong 657, Dong Nai 85, and Tien Giang 65.

Other southern localities recording ten to dozens of new locally acquired infections are Vinh Long 39, Ben Tre 35, Ba Ria – Vung Tau 18, Can Tho 16, Kien Giang 12, and Binh Phuoc 12.  

Except for the central province of Khanh Hoa that announced 38 new cases, other central and northern localities such as Phu Yen, Nghe An, Ha Giang, Hanoi, Quang Ngai reported less than 10 new cases each.

Notably, four out of five Central Highland provinces, namely Dak Lak, Dac Nong, Gia lai and Lam Dong, registered new infections, with Dak Lak alone recording 13 cases.

Elsewhere, the MoH announced 12 imported cases returning from overseas. These patients were placed in quarantine upon their arrival, posing no risk to the community.

Data from the MoH show Vietnam has logged 61,940 new cases following the resurgence of the virus in late April, and 65,607 cases since the onset of the first outbreak in the country.

Nearly 11,500 patients have recovered from the disease, and 334 patients have died ò COVID-19 and other underlying illnesses.

More than 4.3 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine have been administered, with 317,672 people fully receiving two shots.
