The Central Advisory Council on Amnesty convened a meeting to review the lists of prisoners eligible for early pardon on the occasion of the 79th anniversary of the National Day and the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Capital Hanoi before submitting to the President for approval, on the afternoon of September 18th, 2024.

Permanent Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Hoa Binh, Chairman of the Central Advisory Council on Amnesty, chaired the meeting.

Speaking at the meeting, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Hoa Binh underlined that humanity and clemency for offenders are good traditions of our people.

The Deputy Prime Minister stressed that our laws are strict with criminals, seriously punishing ringleaders, stubborn criminals and those repeating dangerous offences, but also lenient and forgiving for offenders who honestly confess and repent their offences, aiming to create favorable conditions for them to correct their mistakes and become good citizens for the society.

Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Hoa Binh recognized the effort of ministries, branches and members of the Amnesty Advisory Council, especially the Ministry of Public Security, the standing agency, and the Supreme People’s Court, in implementing the work of amnesty according to the laws as scheduled.

Reporting at the meeting, Director of the Police Department of Prison, Correctional Institution and Juvenile Reformatory Management Major General Tran Van Thien revealed that inter-sectoral appraisal teams had carefully reviewed thousands of profiles of amnesty beneficiary inmates in prisons, detention centers, district-level criminal judgement execution agencies under the Ministry of Public Security as well as prisons under the Ministry of National Defence.

Major General Tran Van Thien affirmed that all the amnesty lists will be carefully reviewed in a public, democratic, objective, fair manner according to the laws and regulations.

After the meeting, the Central Advisory Council on Amnesty will compile the lists of prison inmates eligible for amnesty and submit to the President for consideration and approval.
